Dr. Matthews seeks recusal of Judge Curvey, plans appeal if request denied

Dr. Matthews, her attorneys, and Quanell X said they are awaiting a decision from Harris County Administrative Judge Susan Brown after seeking the recusal of Judge Damiane Dianne Curvey from a protective order case.

One of Dr. Matthews' attorneys said the next step is for Judge Brown to review the recusal request after Judge Curvey declined to step aside. The attorney stated that Judge Brown has 72 hours to make a decision and that, if the request is denied, the legal team is prepared to pursue an appeal.

The attorneys and Quanell X stated that Judge Curvey should not remain on the case because Dr. Matthews has been named as an adverse witness in Judge Curvey's own protective order case involving her husband, Derrick Curvey.

Dr. Matthews, a national human civil rights activist, advocate and author, said activists often face challenges while carrying out their work and pledged to continue pursuing the matter through the court system.

Attorney U.A. Lewis further stated that the protective order petition does not meet the legal standards required for a protective order and should not have been granted.

A ruling from Judge Brown on the recusal request is pending.
